The world of mp3's has always been dominated by the Applie iPod ever since mp3s had been initially introduced. A unique design and simple custom controls has made it the model for other devices. The gadget has evolved and altered over time but it always manages to preserve it's identity in the marketplace regulation.

The first generation of the player was realised in 2001, this was after only just more than a year had been allocated to creating it. It could retain 5 gigabytes of songs and also the display was simple and monochromatic. Four buttons and a central 1 surrounded by a touch wheel allowed the individual to easily manage the gadget by selecting the music they wished to listen to about the display.

The next generation is just like the first but with a few additional things. The user interface was slightly improved and better storage space was catered for. The screen was still monochromatic though and the wheel was still being used to select items on the screen.

The touch wheel was merged with the buttons when the third generation was realised. A colour feature was also included on this edition which allowed for pictures to become viewed and carried close to you together with songs. This helped it without a doubt identify itself within the market as not a great deal of other mp3 players during the time had this function which allowed them to view pictures on the move.

Following the third generation, it was well and truly well-known in modern culture, new derivations were developed such as the nano which were smaller sized devices without a screen. The latest generations of the device have the ability to play videos and have true colour screens. As well as big advances in the hardware the user interface began to change as well, with more choices for seeking out songs and play lists.

The most modern version of the device is radically different from the original view of the device. The click wheel has been abandoned in preference of a touch screen. The screen now uses up the whole of device and along with the touch capability has allowed a variety of applications to be run on the device.

The ipod has become what people think of when they think of a portable music player, via excellent design and an simple to use interface; it's what many other manufacturers base their devices on. It's got become a benchmark for the mp3 player product market.
