Sony has redesigned the architecture of LTO-5 backup tape, and has introduced a new reel-hub design which helps to maintain an ideal gap between the reel flange and tape edge. The rotation axes and coaxiality of tape hub have been further improved to ensure optimized tape movement.
The cost saving and powerful technologies of the previous LTO generations have been added to the new Sony LTO5 ultrium cartridge along with new breakthrough features. Sony LTO-5 ultrium cartridge has a new innovative mechanism which allows the data managers to make 2 partitions within the backup storage cartridge. This new partition system assists the users to better manage and handle larger data volumes. With the introduction of media partition technology, the file access process has become many times faster that is very helpful for recording rich media files. Sony has utilized environmental friendly manufacturing processes for the production of LTO5 tapes. Sony LTO-5 ultrium tapes are made of 34 percent recycled resin materials. Sony has reduced the overall use of plastics by excluding the use of shrink wrap material and plastic cases.
Sony LTO5 ultrium cartridge provides unprecedented performance in all LTO-5 drives. Smooth and even tape surface will help the drive to read and write data at a blistering speed of 280 MB/sec (compressed). A tough layer of coating is applied over the magnetic particles to extend the tape’s useful life, and improve its resistance to unfavorable environmental conditions.
To further optimize the output frequency, Sony has employed a new binder system in LTO-5 tape cartridge. The strength of this binder system has been increased with greater cross linking. Stronger binder system has resulted in increased robustness of magnetic layer. A new lubrication system has been included by Sony in this binder system. It ensures stable and smooth operations under heavy duty cycles. That is why the Sony LTO-5 ultrium tape delivers excellent performance even after ten thousand tape passes. The cartridge shell of LTO5 tape has been redesigned by Sony which features a deeper label cavity. This will help the barcode labels to better fit onto the backup tape cartridge, thus reducing the risk of falling off.
