If you've been filmmaking for a while and always struggled to finance your short films then we can let you in on the hottest undiscovered short film financing secret. Currently only a very few film makers are doing this, and we wanted to share it with you.

Local Business. A massive multi-billion dollar industry and one that provides a huge amount of value to the economy, and the great thing? That even in today’s economy many still are spending money on advertising to keep their businesses growing and compete against ever more fierce competition. The plan is to approach them and ask them for money to help make your film. The not so good news is that you’ll have to think commercially to peak their interest and provide them with a way to earn money from any short film financing they might give you.

We need to first define which type of companies to approach. It needs to be very specific, since a considerable amount of time can be wasted chasing companies that don’t work. This means it is very important to define the type of company to approach.

It’s a good idea to get into the head of the business you who you are planning to approach and do some research. Do also check on their affiliate program.

Research is finished, and now for the pitch. Come up with an awesome idea for a short film. Cost it. Keep in under a couple or three thousand. Make it an idea that can be viral, something funny and clever. It shouldn’t need product placement, but should be something that can catch on.

Now their mailing list means that you’re giving your film a great chance to go viral. Here’s the next steps. Film the short. Put up the video on You Tube, and ensure that you’ve included the link to their affiliate program in the description. This will be your source of revenue for the future.

Now, of course we need to get people to watch the film. So what’s the trick? By setting up your account on You Tube, and posting the film, it is then possible to promote it to the mailing list that the company has. Ask them to leave comments. Comments mean that the video is popular and You Tube recognises this as a sign that people are engaging in the movie. .

And here's what happens.

By placing an affiliate link in your description we are then able to earn from the traffic generated, and more exiting is the fact that this income is year on year. As long as there is traffic you can earn from the film. The company is happy as it has a popular viral, and you’re happy because there is money coming back to you (and of course you got to make a short film that someone else paid for).
