A business card represents you and your business. They are for promoting and marketing your business. That’s why it is important to have a business card. It's your client's first experience of the product or service you're about to give them and you should always give them the best.
But do you know that a business card is not something you just give to anybody at anytime under any condition? Even in giving out cards, there are certain unwritten rules to be followed. Of course, nobody gets legally penalized or anything to that extent (unless there is misrepresentation of information) but in reality, the punishment can be so much more. Anything about their cards must be on the right side for someone in the business of winning customers. And that includes everything from handling to handing them out.

First, don't just put away your cards as if they were old receipts you don't want to let go of in some circumstances. These are your business cards and they speak for your business. When you have them crumpled or even slightly torn around the edges, you're not going to make a very good impression. Now, this is not something you need. When you're in the initial stages of winning a client, it could all be about the way you look, the way you speak, the way you act and the way your business card looks. It comes out to be practically the same equation eventually, no matter how you mix and match the variables to the equation. The way how your card looks like is important.
Second, know the person to whom you're about to hand your card. There are varying customs when you give out credit cards to your different prospect customers. Do your research because it will certainly have a lot to do with races so if the one you plan on giving a card does not give the same card exchange traditions you are familiar to. For instance, some Asians are not grateful when they are given a card because they don't ask for it. The Japanese, in particular, hand out their cards with both hands and with a nod depending on seniority. Majority of Asians also find it impolite when Westerners are given a card and immediately put it in their pockets without even looking at it. Make sure you've completed your homework because there are different business cards protocols in the world when you deal with international customers.
Third, it is also expected that you ask for the person's card once you’ve given your card. This is more of a universal rule which doesn't take to any particular nationality or group of people. It is simply polite to ask for one's information when you have given yours, unless you have an understanding to the contrary.
Good business card manners are in your hands. Many common mistakes can be easily fixed and avoided completely with a bit of forethought and knowledge of the rules. Appropriate manners will help to guarantee a good status on your company, and only serve on your additional aspiration in marketing. Be sure not to create the error for yourself when you do the small things right because it is crucial to the achievement of any company, and information like etiquette are also often unseen.
A business card can be one of the most powerful marketing tools available. They are not expensive and easy to hand out. You never know when you may meet someone who could become a customer, so why do we forget to carry our business cards around with us? What a big mistake!
A business card can bring in many opportunities, so make it a rule not to go out without them.
