"Jewelry plays a very significant role in our society. It is used to indicate status such as being engaged, being married or even belonging to a particular faith. The Christian faith is known for having many different items of jewelry that each indicates something significant or specific.
This is not unique to the Christian faith. Many other religious groups have specific jewelry items that serve as symbols of their beliefs and which they also wear or place in the house to signify good luck.

For the Christian faith across is the most important symbol. It is therefore also not surprising that the cross is found in many of the Christian jewelry items."
"A lot of people think the purpose of jewelry is purely for aesthetics. This is true. But there are pieces of jewelry that are so much more than just a piece of beauty. Yes, these accessories can either make or break your outfit depending on the kind of fashion that you are trying to portray. But those pieces can actually mean more than the extra charm they add to their wearers' looks. Jewelry can be for a purpose other than aesthetics. In fact, they can be used to profess one's faith. They can even be used for security such as in the case of those who wear Christian jewelry.
There are many types of religious jewelry and the most common are, of course, crosses. In fact, it seems like everywhere we look, somebody's wearing a cross pendant, ring, brooch or earrings. International diva Madonna became controversial because of her bold representations of the cross in her concerts which offended Catholic communities around the world. Though crosses have been used for other purposes, other types of religious jewelry fortunately have been spared. Medallions are one of them.
A medallion is a type of religious jewelry that comes in metal relief bearing the image of a Christian saint of whom the wearer is a devotee. The faith has more than thousands of saints that have inspired those who wear them for the exemplary life that they have lived and for the causes that they have stood for. For example, there is a saint for lovers, a saint for businessmen and even a saint for lost things. It is believed that while these people who had lived as true disciples of God are long gone, they can still influence their devotees' lives by praying on their behalf depending on their needs. A follower, therefore, can wear a particular medallion as a form of expressing his devotion to that particular saint.
It is known to little but the history of jewelry itself had a lot to do with religion. Although these precious metals were mostly used to represent social and political ties in the past, religion was actually one of the first reasons for wearing jewelry.
Nobody knows for sure what power lies behind religious jewelry if, at all, there is. But those who wear it for religious purposes are happy with the internal sense of security they feel when they know they're wearing a true man or woman of God on their bodies. The kind of religious jewelry that one is wearing won’t matter, what matters most is how it can make a difference in one’s life and his thoughts, actions and beliefs. "
