Windows are one of the most important elements of a room’s interior design, both in function and decorative effect. When you’re working with a limited budget, it can be hard to install the decorative window treatments that you actually want. With some creativity and resourcefulness, you can actually come up with some great window décor options that will look great and won’t cost you much. Here are just a few ideas to get you started.
Curtain or Shade Stencils
Stenciling is a great way to create your very own custom window shades or curtains, and it works especially well for decorating children’s rooms. You can make your stencils or purchase oil-based board stencils. Trace the outlines of the stencils with a pencil and make sure to stay within the lines.

Embellish With Ribbon
Stitching a line of decorative ribbon across the top or near the top of a set of plain curtains is a great way to breathe new life into them. Ribbon is relatively inexpensive (i.e. compared with purchasing a whole new set of curtains), so you can go as fancy as you want. Make sure you pick a ribbon that matches the décor and color palette of the room.
Use Solar Shades
Solar shade fabric is not necessarily inexpensive, but it can help give the room a smooth even lighting. This fabric requires very little in terms dressing up. If you have an interior design that’s more contemporary or modern, plain and custom size window shades can look great.
Custom Leaf Designs
With this method, you can get a designer look on your shades or curtains at a small fraction of the price. Start by tracing a branch pattern on your shades or curtains using white chalk. Cut out three different sized leaves on card stock and used them to trace leaves onto the branch pattern. Use acrylic or fabric paint to fill the outlines in. Let it dry and use a cloth to wipe off the excess chalk.
Adding Lace Fabric
Adding lace trimming to the bottom edge of your curtains is another great way to spruce them up. All you need to use to add lace trimming (or any kind of fabric trimming you like) is fabric glue.
