Every employer, depending on the industry, looks for different kinds of specialized skills in their future employees. Aside from job-specific skills, there are certain general skills (aka “soft skills) that are universally guaranteed to make you look more attractive in the eyes of potential employers. Most job seekers already possess many of these skills, and these skills can be improved upon with training and professional development. Furthermore, once you’ve developed these skills, you can tailor your resume around them so that they stand out even more. Online free resume creators will often ask you to add or highlight skills that you find relevant; you should include some of the following.

Communication
Your ability to listen and communicate well, both verbally and in writing, is one of the most important skills that employers seek. No matter what business you’re in, successful communication is crucial.

Analytical and Research Skills
Analytical and research skills have to do with your ability to assess a problem and gather the necessary information that you need to address it. This is a skill that is very closely related to the next one:

Computer Literacy
We live in the age of Web 2.0 and seem to be drawing evermore closer the edge of the next Web incarnation. Computer literacy skills are crucial, especially if you’re applying for jobs that have to do with networking and information gathering/organization/dissemination. Proficiency with basic programs like Word and Excel is now standard for many job positions.

Cultural Sensitivity
In the United States, the workplace is becoming more culturally and ethnically diverse every year. An employee who can show multi-cultural sensitivity and awareness has a better chance of landing the job.

Professionalism
Professionalism is reflected not just by whether or not you wear a tie to your job interview, but also (and mainly) by how you conduct yourself. Employers are looking for someone who seems responsible and mature and shows a good deal of self-confidence in his or her ability to do the job.

Commitment to the Job
Especially in a volatile economy, employers want to know that they can depend on potential employees to stay and commit to a job. They’re looking for candor, honesty and enthusiasm.

If you would like to learn more on how to incorporate these skills into your resume in a way that highlights them, you can find plenty of free resume help online. There are free resume makers available that can provide you with more tips on how to increase your chances of landing that dream job you’ve always wanted, even in today’s tough economy.
