Stop smoking
One of the most common vices affecting our modern society is cigarette smoking. Tobacco is a damaging drug, with initially covert negative effects. When health issues later start to arise and the smoker becomes aware of the harm it does, it can already be too hard for him or her to stop smoking. While developed countries make every effort to acquaint the population with the growing number of diseases it can cause and decrease the smokers’ percentage, developing countries have the highest number of people that take up smoking or are unable to stop smoking. Lack of information or low quality of life are among the causes for a high rate of smoking individuals, many of them starting as early as 13 years old.

Experimenting when young is characteristic of all of us, and is hard to avoid smoking out of curiosity. Peer pressure and the need to belong to a group can take you there and they can also be a drawback in your struggle to stop smoking. It is very important to know the risk of smoking before your body starts needing a cigarette. Even more so if you are a heavy smoker and want to kick the habit. Cigarettes increase the risk of stroke, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and many other that cause premature death. It is important to stop smoking not only for yourself but for your loved and closed ones too. Your life is connected to other people and you indirectly abuse them while abusing yourself, both literally (blowing smoke around them, cutting out years of your life with each cigarette) and figuratively (always adopting the possibility of premature death). All these repercussions should convince you to stop smoking.

When you stop smoking, you win in the long run. It may get very hard after a few days or a few hours, but the struggle you feel when tackling withdrawal will enhance the gratification you will fell afterwards. You should stop smoking to prolong your life, to live healthier, feel free and be in control of the things you want to do. Smoking affects your social life, your appearance and mental state. Because smoking is a vice and tobacco a drug you will be reminded of that every time: when you spend so much money on it, when you will not be allowed to smoke at a restaurant and be forced to go out for a smoke while your friends are inside – and the same goes for the workplace , when meeting new people being unable to stop smoking pictures you as a week person.

You might have tried to stop smoking before and failed, but that should not discourage you. The more you try the higher the chances to succeed. Avoid doing things you have associated with smoking and change your schedule and your diet. Take up a hobby to keep busy and stop smoking when your body craves for a cancer stick. You can also use nicotine patches, gums or inhalers. But the most effective is to stop smoking cold turkey and replace your smoking instincts by eating stick shaped vegetables, chewing gum or plastic straws and keeping lollipops close. Do not hesitate to ask a pharmacist or your doctor about certain medication if you have great difficulties dealing with withdrawal. Tell your closed ones to be patient with you and join support groups, exercise, drink plenty of water and consider alternative methods as well, like acupuncture, hypnosis or aversion therapy. Just stop smoking!
