There are a lot of horse owners that have horses that are aging and doing everything they can to keep their horses healthy and strong. Our horses are like family to us and they have provided for us lots of memories that we cherish. A lot of horse owners have horses that are over 20 years of age which in comparison with humans is equivilant to 60 human years.

Every horse ages differently. Depending on a horses breed, work consistency, recent or reoccurring health issues, and personal daily maintenance each horse has a varied aging process. Horses are much like humans in the ones that have been taken care of the best normally will live longer than those that have not. There are many owners that are meticulous with their horse care but still there are other factors to consider. Perhaps the most important concern of any horse owner is the health of their horse's teeth.

Horses are in the class of animals that like to graze to eat. Animals that graze have similar designs in their body makeup. They all have mouths that are appropriately designed to work well with their angled neck which hangs to the ground to feed by cutting the grass with their teeth and chewing it. This particular way of eating causes a lot of wear and tear on the horse’s teeth. The enamel on the teeth begins to wear down and eventually their teeth start falling out one by one. With missing teeth horses have a tendency to lose valuable nutrition because they won’t eat as much and their health begins to debilitate which starts the process of health issues.

All horse owners should have their horses seen by a horse vet on a regular basis to ensure they are functioning properly. They will specifically be looking for unusual wear and tear on the teeth including other issues like waves, swollen or painful gums, and other potential problems. Continual care for your horses in this manner will keep them living longer and happier lives. Introducing your horses to mash and keeping them accustomed to eating mash from time to time is a great idea just in case dental problems arise.

Caring for horses properly is a must for horse owners. Make it a habit to check your horse’s health daily. You should be checking the horse’s mouth for any problems with eating and instances where there are problems with quidding, issues with drinking water, possible choking, or other issues that you become suspicious of. With older horses there is often a problem with them desiring to eat long fiber food. This particular problem can be solved with switching them to smaller sized cropped hay or maybe even add high fiber cubes as mash. Staying on top of dental problems is the most prominent way to understanding your horse’s health and preventing problems. You will save lots of money in vet bills and your horse will be a much happier horse if you follow these suggestions.
