Hypnosis Techniques--The Affect Bridge

Two of the most common emotions that hypnotherapy attempts to eradicate through the affect bridge are fear and anger. So, if the hypnotist is working with a person who is dealing with anger, what the hypnotist will do is induce trance and then follow the affect bridge until the unconscious mind brings the person to their earliest remembered example where they felt anger.By taking away anger from its roots, what happens is that the recurring anger a person feels will be removed as well. This same hypnosis procedure applies to how a hypnotist eradicates damaging fear in a client.

A hypnotist who is following the affect bridge must not forget that once the source of whatever particular emotion they are trying to get rid of is exposed, that the person has still likely learned important instruction from the occurrence. This means that whilst the hypnotist clears away the negative emotions, that they must see to it that their client maintains the learning experiences from whatever caused these negative emotions to transpire in the first place.

So, as a basic rule, the hypnotist must first induce trance, then follow the affect bridge to discover the very first experience that led to the unwanted emotion. Then, the hypnotist should bring their client through a regression in order to dissolve the unwanted emotional state while at the same time encouraging their client to learn from their past experiences that caused them to experience these unwanted emotions to begin with.

The affect bridge is one of the most critical tools a hypnotist can use while they perform regressions on their clients to clear away unwanted emotions, but the hypnotist must not dissolve the important learning experiences along with the negative emotions.
