How to Hook Up an HD Radio to Your Car? HD Radio technology is the technology used by FM and AM radio stations to transmit the audio waves and data values through digital signal. FM and AM stands for Frequency Modulation and Amplitude Modulation. Installation kit of this HD radio has two parts. The first one is the head unit. This head unit is the one which has controls and this is fixed in factory itself. The entire radio can be controlled by this head unit in the dash board. And the second one is the radio. This is connected to the head unit. Buying a HD radio is an optional choice left to the car owner. Service received via HD radio is free of cost.

As a first step the negative terminal of the battery in the car is disconnected perfectly for safety reasons. Antenna jack from your HD radio is connected to the antenna of the car. Do not connect the same to the antenna input of the head unit.

The black coloured wire is connected from the back. A clean and paint less metal location is selected. Wiring has pieces coming with it. The yellow coloured lead is connected to the twelve volts constant supply terminal. The cable is connected to the CD player in your car using the blue coloured connector. This is called as IP BUS cable. The other end is connected to the head unit in the car’s dash board. HD radio’s connector is black in colour.

Now you should see to that the auto antenna control terminal of your car is connected to the blue coloured or white coloured cable that is coming out of head unit. This cable is meant for the control signal. Use your car’s instruction manual or documentation to do this. All the wiring and joints are insulated with the electrical insulation tape.

HD radio is mounted in the most convenient place in the car. Hook and loop fasteners are used to fix the HD radio under any seat to the car’s carpet. The reason why the radio is fixed under a seat is that the radio is controlled by the head unit in the dash board and not by the radio itself. The negative terminal of the car’s battery is reconnected and the radio is tested.
