MIL-STD-130 is a DoD (Department of Defense) mandated standard for any item must be UID (Unique Identifier) compliant, that MIL-STD-130 allows the UID symbol to be marked or printed with most of the common conventional technologies used to create labels or name plates. This standard can be integrated with most existing processes or source. The DoD (Department of Defense) mandated that all the Contractors assets as well as personal properties must be clearly marked with a unique serialized ID number in order to be compliant by the MIL-STD-130.

The Unique Identifier (UID), or known by the DoD (Department of Defense) as Item Unique Identification (IUID). The UID or IUID needs to mark all significant items in the form of sequence of bits, numeric, or character string that are assigned to distinguish the entity or its applicable characteristic that separates it from any other entity. All UID or IUID marking can only have one incidence within its specific scope of use. The IUID is physically marked on the material assets by means of a 2D data matrix with ISO15434 formats.

MIL-STD-130 Compliant Labeling or Marking

First of all every label must be durable and permanent, in order for the UID or IUID label to be compliant with MIL-STD-130. There are a wide variety of UID name plates and labels made from materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, laser marked adhesive backed tape, or polyester. Never the less, all UID or IUID’s must meet the MIL-STD-130 mandated standards, although usually the UID sequence is necessary to meet all MIL-STD-130 standards.

There are specifications required by MIL-STD-130, such as certain engineering documentation conditions of military items or products that may not qualify with the American Identification Languages. You can refer to exact specifications that are clear in section 3 of MIL-STD-130, that contains the terms as well as helps product designers with logical definitions on their products created for the military.

MIL-STD-130 Amended

In December of 2007, the DoD (Department of Defense) released MIL-STD-130N, which will take over for MIL-STD-130M, amended in December of 2005. Due to the constant revisions of MIL-STD –Specs when dealing with these items or products that are extremely important to the DoD and the Contractor. So when challenged with such a complicated process you should refer to a professional company that deals specifically with the DoD (Department of Defense) and is familiar with all standards and compliant with all UID or IUID labels or name plates.

There are companies such as UID2GO.com that specifically produce nothing but bar code identification systems for the DoD (Department of Defense) exclusively. So be sure to consult the professionals at UID2GO for specific label and marking requirements revised and mandated by MIL-STD-130N.
