Six Things You do Everyday to Attract Burglars

Did you know that most families actually take steps to make criminals feel welcome to enter their home? Though you may not realize it, many of the steps you take as part of your daily routine actually make you much more susceptible to burglaries. Here are six things that most people do everyday that invite burglars to target your home:

1) Leaving a key under the mat. You may think that this keeps you safe if you’re locked out of the home, but criminals know exactly where to look. If they want to break in to your home, the first places they will be checking are under the welcome mat, under flowerpots, and on top of the door frame. If you leave your spare key there, you’re just asking them to come inside. If you feel that you must have a spare outside, invest in a combination safe so that not just anyone can use the key. There are devices designed just for this purpose.

2) Turning off your lights when you leave. Though it saves energy, is it really worth leaving your home more attractive to burglars? Most burglars hope not to find anyone at home. When the lights are out, it’s more likely that the homeowners are gone. Leave at least one light on at all times. Some experts even recommend a loud radio or a TV set on a timer so that anyone near the home will assume someone is inside.

3) Leaving the door unlocked. What could be easier for a burglar? You should keep these not only locked, but also protected with alarms. Leaving a door or window unlocked, whether you’re home or not, no matter the time of day, is simply the worst thing to do if you want to avoid a burglary.

4) Only using the doorknob lock. If you don’t use the deadbolt on your door, or worse yet, you don’t even have one, you’re not much more protected than if you had left your door completely unlocked. The truth is, doorknob locks make it easy for a burglar to kick in your door, because they don’t extend into the door frame very far. A deadbolt, on the other hand, goes further into the door frame, and is much more secure.

5) Leaving tools sitting around. The opportunistic burglar may not have their own set of burglary tools, but they will take advantage of that hammer you left outside. Got a ladder? If it’s stored in the shed, any burglar could use it to break into a second story window, or even simply steal it. Keep them in your garage or in a locked shed instead.

6) Plant trees and bushes all around your house. Though you may not realize it, this is actually very important to your home security. Though you may like the look of bushes planted right next to the house, these beautiful shrubs give plenty of hiding places for someone who’s working to open your door or window and doesn’t want to be spotted.

Did you know that a burglary happens every 15 seconds? Billions of dollars are stolen each year from unsuspecting homeowners who simply leave their homes open to these thieves. Most burglars actually come unarmed, and most even enter through unlocked doors or windows. Reconsider your daily routine to determine whether you are unknowingly leaving your home open to burglaries.
