A high credit score will allow you find good credit, avail of agreeable interest rates, and increase your chances of getting a new home or a job. The score is a reflection of where we stand financially. To lenders and credit givers, it is a three digit number that can either make or break the approval of a loan. The nature of the score also determines whether a potential borrower presents a high credit risk and if they need to be given a corresponding higher interest package.

Scores are calculated from credit report information. Report bureaus, which compile this information, each have models for generating the three digit score. In the same way, score ranges may vary. A score found on the higher range will obviously be more appealing to credit card companies. You can go online and find links to help you get a free credit score.

Here are some ways to help you improve a bad score, or simply to just give a boost to your already satisfactory number.

• Make sure your report is accurate and updated. Usually the fastest way to add points to your score is making sure that your report is free of errors. It is not uncommon for mistakes to appear on your report and major ones can be disastrous to your score.

Also, it would be best if you keep the files in your report updated. Negative old information should be removed, eventually resulting in a better score. You can check out Free Credit Reports.com for the best credit report you can get quickly and hassle free.

• Keep card balances low. Lenders notice the ratio between your balances and the actual credit that is available to you. It is customary to use only 30 of your credit limit. Having more credit than what you actually spend is a good source of points for your score. Also, it is an effective way for you to better manage your card debts.

• Pay your bills on time. This is probably the most obvious way to obtain a high score, but it is often the most neglected. Loan companies approve applications to people who habitually pay their bills on time and always meet at least the minimum payment on their statements. This is a demonstration of a potential borrower’s reliability in paying back loans.

• Pay down your card debts. Paying off installment loans will definitely help raise your score, but it has been found that paying down revolving accounts like cards has a dramatic effect on your score. Being consistent with monthly payments will have a positive effect on your score. This will also prevent your card balances from becoming unmanageable.

• Piggyback on someone’s good credit. Another person’s good credit can help make your own look better. If a person with good credit co signs with you on a lease or agrees to be an additional card holder on a card application, their own credit history will appear on your report. Make sure that both you and the other person are comfortable with these arrangements.
