Before going into step by step instruction for doing this installation job lets learn why it is called double DIN. DIN usually is of the size 180mm length and height of 50 mm. Double DIN reefers to twice the size of stereo with height being double. Thus it is 180 mm and 100 mm in length and height respectively. The size may differ but the basic procedure of installation remains the same. Now let us look at the instructions. These steps are framed taking Chevrolet Silverado car of 2005 as the model. Here is a long list of things we may need to complete the installation of double DIN DVD monitor. They are

Flat head screwdriver ,1/4 inch ratchet and socket set, double din DVD head unit, Vehicle specific wiring harness, Vehicle specific dash kit, GM antenna adapter ,Wire cutters, wire strippers, wire crimper and blue butt connector. First step is to press the brake pedal with foot .

Next thing to do is the key should be turned to on position and column shifter is pulled to one position . The bezel is pulled off with hands . It is usually located around the dash board. Next switch off the ignition of the car.

Now we move to the second step. Its time for us to use ratchet and socket to remove stereo from dash board. Next we should remove the wiring harness . This unplugging is done as we pull out and remove the stereo. The dash kit is placed in the dash board with the help of ratchet that is quarter inch and by using the socket. Inside the dash kit the double DIN unit is fixed by sliding the cage that is attached with the head unit. The cage is pressure fitted tight into the kit for which we use screw driver which has flat head.

Next step is connection of wires of wiring harnesses of DIN stereo and that of vehicle. This step is easy because there is a specific color coding system. Connection is done by just matching same color wires. Wire strippers are used for removing insulation to about quarter inch on both wires to enable connection.

The last step is plugging of wiring harness. Also we need to plug the adapter of antenna to the lead of the antenna. Installation becomes complete once the antenna lead and harness are plugged back into the stereo. Finally ensure that stereo is locked into the cage. This can be confirmed if we hear clicking sounds as we fix the stereo in dash board.
