There are many electronics that run on batteries and hence can be used while travelling and where there is no source of electricity. In such cases the batteries need to have high power supply therefore they can be used for a longer duration than usual. An example of such a battery is gel cell batteries. They contain the electrolyte in the form of a gel. They have various other names by which they are popular. It is also called as dry cell, maintenance free, non spill able batteries. They can endure extreme conditions of low and high temperature. The applications of such batteries are in motorcycles, wheelchairs, and also in the radio communications. They can be used over a long period of time by recharging it periodically. However few directions on how to charge gel cell batteries is essential to recharge.

The recharging of these batteries may be done in more than one way. The most advantageous way is the charging with constant voltage. One way is done fast and hence called fast charging. The other way is known as float charge. These two processes are explained in the following paragraphs.

The first step of the fast charging is to insert the battery inside charger that is provided along with the battery. The instructions would be given in the manual of the charger. Follow it and place it properly. The charger is then turned on and charged. This can be done till the voltage at the terminal reaches approximately 2.40 volt per cell at a temperature of twenty degree Celsius.

This type of charging is also called cyclic. The battery is left for charging till the current for charging reduces to 0.01C amps. The C represents the amp hour rate of the battery. The battery’s charging is then stopped. The charge is stopped using the cyclic mode or can be changed to float type charging mode.

The second way of charging is to do by the float type of charging. The battery is first placed into the charger. This can be done with the help of the instructions given in the manual on how to place the cell.

Then, the charger is turned on. The charging is continued at a constant voltage of about 2.25V per cell. This differs for the twelve volt battery. The temperature is maintained at a twenty degree C. The battery is generally capable of regulating the current at the maintained voltage.

After the charging is complete, the charger can be turned off. The battery is then removed from the charger. The battery has to be charged optimally and not less or more charging.

It is also advisable to not use the charger in the automobile since there is no proper voltage regulation. The charging should be away from flames and also overheating may happen if it is continuously charged in the cyclic mode. Therefore it is important to follow these directions on how to charge gel cell batteries and also take a note of the warnings that are mentioned in the above.
