FIFA football world cup 2010 – South Africa

The most prestigious international competition for men football team the FIFA world cup 2010 will be the 19th FIFA world cup match. This premier football sporting event has been schedule between 11th June 2010 and 11th July 2010 in South Africa. World cup 2010 is one of the most viewed sporting event all over the world with hundred of billions of people watching live.

Each team will be fighting for the winning trophy bringing pride to their country. The game is played in a four year period and the winning team is announced at the fourth year. The game is played continuously since it started in 1930’s except at the time of World War II.

This amazing championship season is now being held in South Africa this year. South Africa is the first African nation given the freedom to host the football world cup. The current cup champion is Italy who won the cup in 2006 against France. 2010 FIFA world cup is the finale of the tournament with the qualification process that started in 2007 august. The process involved 204 FIFA national teams.

No other sporting will have such a huge worldwide support. Hence this is the main reason why all the eyes in the world are wrapped up towards the date of the soccer world cup finals. Qualified teams

As the hosting nation South Africa has been qualified automatically for the tournament. Yet South Africa participated in the world cup qualifiers for the reason that the CAF qualifiers to dish up as a qualifying tournament for the 2010 African cup of nations. Like the previous tournament the defending champion Italy has to participate in the qualification.

The final draw was made on 2nd December 2009 as per the procedures of the FIFA organizing committee. Seven squads joined the final draw and the seeding was based on the FIFA world ranking in 2009 October. Finally the qualified teams were as follows:

Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France
Group B: Argentina, Nigeria, Korea Republic, Greece
Group C: England, USA, Slovenia, Algeria
Group D: Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana
Group E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon
Group F: Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia
Group G: Cote d'Ivoire, Portugal, Brazil, Korea DPR
Group H: Honduras, Chile, Spain, Switzerland

Prize money and club payments

FIFA announced the total prize money for the tournament as $420 million. This is 60% increase from the money that was announced for 2006 world cup. At the beginning each team will get $1 million for the cost of preparation and once when they have entered into the group stage the teams will get $8 million. So here is how the prize money will be distributed:

$9 million - Round of 16
$18 million - Quarter-finals
$20 million - Semi-finals
$24 million - Runners up
$30 million - Winners

Venues

The FIFA organizers in 2005 revealed a provisional list that consists of 13 venues to host the world cup. They were Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Kimberley, Nelspruit, Orkney, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, and Rustenburg. Then this was lessened down to ten venues which were officially announced by FIFA on 17th March 2006.

The finally announced stadiums were Soccer city in Johannesburg, Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, Cape town stadium in cape town, Ellis part Stadium in Johannesburg, Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane, Mbombela stadium in Nelspruit and Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.

The general timetable for the matches is:
11 ­ 25 June: Group Matches
26 ­ 29 June: Final 16 Matches
2 ­ 3 July: Quarter Finals FIFA 2010
6 ­ 7 July: Semi Finals FIFA 2010
10 July: Match for 3rd and 4th place
11 July: Final 2010 Soccer World Cup
Environmental impact

This biggest sporting event is expected to produce more than 2.75 million tones of carbon which is 9 times more than the previous finals which took place in Germany. This is mainly due to the international flights to South Africa.
