Normally, labor and delivery happen without any complications and problems. Serious complication and delivery problems happen rarely, while other occurrences are anticipated and can be effectively treated. Problems with labor and delivery however sometimes come up suddenly and unexpectedly. Keeping your visits to the doctor or your certified midwife regular during your pregnancy period can help you keep up with your pregnancy’s every details and even the anticipation of pregnancy problems and eventually increase your chances of having a bouncing healthy baby despite these labor and delivery complications.

Labor and Delivery: Safe or Scary?

Labor and delivery is a unique experience for women. Despite the overwhelmingly delightful joy all women share with being pregnant, most women would admit to being scared when it comes to undergoing labor and delivery. A good knowledge about the many complications and problems of labor and delivery and how they can be handled and managed can certainly help expectant mothers to at least a little bit more at ease with the situation.

Abnormal Positioning of the Baby. One of the most common problems faced during the labor and delivery period of pregnancy is when the baby is not in its supposedly normal position. Normally, a baby who is ready to come out during delivery should have his head down and facing the backside of the mother. Babies who are not positioned this way may pose problems in the birthing process. Cases like these call for the physician to move the baby around externally or the baby will be delivered through a Caesarean section instead of the normal birthing method.
Placenta Problems. Another complication during labor and delivery can be rooted to problems with the placenta. When the mother’s placenta is blocking or obstructing the cervix or placenta previa or when the placenta abnormally separates from the uterus earlier than the normal time or abruptio placentia, a Caesarian section may be needed for the delivery of the baby.
Fetal Distress. Another labor and delivery complication that worries most mothers and doctors alike is the abnormal heart rate of the baby during the birthing process. When the baby’s heart rate is not within the normal range, the baby is said to be under fetal distress and should be a cause for alarm. Giving oxygen to the mother, changing her position, and giving her more fluids are just some of the solutions to this problem. Also, when the unborn baby moves his bowel in the womb, this can be a cause for a complication during labor and delivery as the meconium may trigger fetal distress.
Abnormal Labor Patterns. When labor does not progress normally in its regular pattern, the complication will be handled by doctors by the use of medications to induce labor with a normal pattern.
Other Complications. Anesthesia and other medications used during labor and delivery may also cause complications. These can come in various forms such as an allergic reaction or some respiratory problems on the mother. Most of these problems are handled and managed professionally by the physicians who may give alternative medicines.
