Prestigious German automobile makers BMW introduced BMW X3 which falls in the compact crossover segment range. The design was jointly done by Magna Steyr which is a manufacturing company based in Graz, Austria. This car was launched in auto show in Detroit in the year 2003. It was not received well in the market and various reasons were attributed to it. Few of them were it was very expensive priced around 30,000 US dollars, the ride was not smooth, interiors were made up of plastic components. The usage in the off road was limited and did not have automatic head lights and gear reduction. Few were also disappointed because production was not directly done by BMW and was given for contract to Magna Steyr. Based on the complaints received a number of rectifications were done. Blue tooth was installed as a part of the premium model itself.
Fenders in the front made up of a single piece replaced two fenders made up of 2 pieces. Engine of 2d was widely available in models of 2004. Interiors were made more beautiful and stronger with rigid panels of plastic. Also the dull carpet of Grey color inside was replaced with colored high quality carpets to match the color of leather seats. Suspensions were made softer than the previous. It followed longitudinally mounted layout and BMW e83 platform. Also front engine layout was present. The engine had a capacity of 3 liters and delivered a powered of 256 horse power. Transmissions were both manual and automatic of 6 speeds.

The fuel capacity was 67 liters. BMW 3series was one of the models related with BMW X3. It had a wheel base of 110 inches and its height was 65.9 inches in the model of 2004 and slightly more around 1.675 meter in 2006 model. It measured 180 inches in length and 73 inches or 1.855 meters in width. In US markets there were many choices for engines depending on the power developed and the torque produced. It is only in this BMW X3 model changes were very much visible every year. Accordingly sales of the car varied each year. The number of cars sold in the year 2004, 2005, 2006 ,2007 and 2008 were 34000, 30000, 31000,28000 and 17000 approximately respectively.2007 model was small and even parking was easier. Another unique feature in this model was that sensors were fitted both at the front and the rear end. Depending upon the distance this car is with other vehicles, buildings or disturbance different beep tones were generated. To indicate in which gear position the driver is in there is a LCD panel also. The BMW X3 updated version featured among the best car list for the year 2005 in Canada in concept cars segment.
