A singer can learn to sing based on the following things, how you listen to yourself, being able to control pitch, breath for a continuous supply of air, and control muscle in your throat and body to produce tones, and a lot of proper practice.
Professional singing lessons will help you to be able to recognize all of the things i mentioned and put them together to be able to learn to sing in the end. But the truth is you can do all of it all by yourself.

The real way to increase your voice range is to practice properly, without straining your voice and building your voice range over a period of time. That is the only way to increase your voice range safely and still keep a rich tone about your voice. If you want to increase your range you should do it safely and without hurting your vocal chords and avoid straining your voice.
If you practice properly, learning with scales will be easy for you. You sing different scales in a variety of phonetic phrases. You can control it by yourself and you can make improvement in your voice range that’s for sure, but it will take more time if you do it properly. The more you practice the more you will expect that you will improve.
You also have to bear in mind that range is not the measure of being a great singer. Most notes are reachable by any human being so don’t hurt yourself reaching those notes and trying to do non human things when it comes to the concept of increasing your voice range.
Worry also about pitch. If you can’t hit the right notes when you sing it doesn’t matter how high or low you can sing. Start with the easy stuff that you know you can do and work from there. Develop the things that you know and practice well, so that you can learn fast. If you think that you’re off pitch or off key, correct it and do not be ashamed about it. You will be surprised one day that you are no longer singing wrong notes and wrong pitch. For you to be able to become a good singer, your ears are a great help and they are your key to succeed. You should know how to use them in your singing lessons so that you can learn to sing better and fast.
