MIL-STD-130 - The Military Identification Standard

By: Id Integration
Submitted: 2009-12-22 02:08:29 | Word Count: 366

MIL-STD-130 is the United States military's standard for marking assets and personal property with conventional technologies. This military standard ensures that all military property is labeled with name plates and labels that can be easily comprehended and integrated into the existing organizational processes of the Department of Defense. A designation that is used under this mandatory standard is referred to as an Item Unique Identifier, or IUID.

An IUID may be made of any of several textiles ranging from metals to adhesive tape, but each IUID must have a unique identification number that is used solely for that item. Once this IUID number has been assigned to an item, it is never used again for any other item, and an item retains its original IUID regardless of how many times it is re-engineered or modified. IUID numbers are assigned to property and assets that are used solely be the Department of Defense as well as those that are loaned to private contractors. In some cases, an IUID number is assigned to a single lot of assets that contain a gross quantity of individual products. In these cases, the contents of the lot are not assigned individual IUID numbers, and the IUID number assigned to the lot is permanently retired once its contents have been redistributed.

The technical specifications of MIL-STD-130 are quite complex, particularly for those that are unfamiliar with the terminology and principles at the core of unique item identification. However, it is essential that each of the guidelines set forth in MIL-STD-130 are followed in order for a property or asset to be IUID compliant. Due to the complex nature of IUID coding, it is recommended that contractors consider consulting with the professionals when trying to get their items up to code. The experts at Jet City Laser are intimately familiar with the standards of MIL-STD-130 and can easily provide you with information that is specific to your particular industry.
