All Iowans are eligible to receive an H1N1 flu vaccination. The announcement was made by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) last week.

“Local public health agencies have done a tremendous job during this vaccination campaign, and in getting those at highest risk vaccinated,“ said IDPH Director Tom Newton. “We feel confident that it is now time to expand H1N1 vaccinations to the general public.”

The H1N1 flu vaccine became eligible to the general public Monday, Dec. 14.

While H1N1 vaccinations will be available to all Iowans, IDPH continues to encourage those at highest risk of complications to make sure they are vaccinated.

While Iowa continues to see a decline in influenza-like illness, H1N1 continues to circulate in Iowa. Public health officials predict another wave of H1N1 illness will occur after the holidays. This would coincide with what is typically the time Iowa sees the highest rates of influenza activity – January and February.”

Peg McNally, Director of Palo Alto County Community Health Services said, “This is a great time to get your immunization because being immunized now will offer protection over the holidays, when many Palo Alto County residents travel.”

Community Health Services has scheduled H1N1 flu vaccination clinics that are open to anyone age 6 months and over. Children 9 years of age and under should receive 2 does of the H1N1 vaccine, 28 days apart, to provide complete protection. There is no cost for the H1N1 vaccine.

Community Health held an H1N1 clinic Monday, Dec. 14, by appointment only.

Walk-In Clinics

Walk-in Clinics are scheduled in the Community Health Office in Emmetsburg on Tuesday, Dec. 15 through Friday, Dec. 18, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. No appointment is needed. The Community Health office is located in Palo Alto County Hospital. Limited parking is available on the northeast corner of the hospital which is the door closest to the office.
