Blue Cross of Northeastern Pa. gives $25K to support nursing students

Nursing students are getting a boost to finish their education from Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania, which has joined forces with three schools in Bradford and Tioga counties As part of a statewide effort started in 2004 by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation, Blue Cross is providing more than $25,025 in scholarships during the 2009-10 academic year to students studying nursing at Mansfield University, Northern Tier Career Center and the Pennsylvania College of Technology - North Campus.
The support from Blue Cross for nursing education comes at a time when local doctors and hospitals are coping with a significant shortage of nurses, according to a Blue Cross press release.

Blue Cross also is providing scholarship assistance this year for students at 12 other nursing programs throughout its 13-county service area of northeastern and north central Pennsylvania.
At the awarding of the scholarship checks were Shari Rossiter, director of nursing, Sayre House Nursing Home; Brenda Abplanalp, director of north campus outreach services, Pennsylvania College of Technology; Dr. Janeen Sheehe, health sciences department chair and director of nursing, Mansfield University; Cynthia Yevich, senior director, community and foundation affairs, Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania; Brenda Benninger, nursing faculty, Northern Tier Career Center; and Karon Crawford and Jessica Fowler, practical nursing students from Northern Tier Career Center.
Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania, headquartered in Wilkes-Barre, is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
Foundation honors two
Two local residents were honored recently by the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers with Partners in Philanthropy awards, honoring professional advisers who have worked to further philanthropy in our communities.

Allen, investment services manager of Tioga State Investment ServicesFinlayson received the award for establishing the Kathryn P. Kerrigan Funds. The funds from this estate will benefit the Tioga County Rural Ministries and the graduates of Waverly High School.
A donor-designated fund was established for Rural Ministries to provide services to the elderly in Tioga County.
The scholarship fund for graduates of Waverly High School was established to provide at least four $2,000 scholarships each year.
Allen was honored for the establishment of the Finkle Rosenberg Scholarship Fund for graduates of Owego Free Academy.
This is also a $2,000 scholarship award each year for graduates who are going into teaching.
The winners have their name inscribed on a plaque at the foundation office and received a desk clock with an inscribed plaque.
Bill Ransom, board chair of the foundation, said, "It is significant that through the work of the Tioga County Advisory Board, begun several years ago, that these professional advisers were made aware of the work of the CFTT. They are to be applauded for their efforts on behalf of the CFTT
