Wedding Theme - How to Choose Your Perfect Wedding Theme

Choosing a wedding theme for your wedding has become very popular with couples in recent years. Having a theme helps to personalize your wedding to you both, help you to coordinate the whole look and feel of your day and is lots of fun too!

So how do you go about choosing the theme for your wedding and making sure you pick one that is right for you?

Firstly you have to consider the style of your wedding. Your theme will be most prominent at your reception and evening party, although elements of it can be incorporated into your wedding ceremony too.

For a formal, traditional wedding don’t go for something that is laid back and relaxed. You need to choose something that will add style and elegance to your day. This works in reverse for a casual wedding, although here there is no reason why you cannot choose a theme that oozes sophistication and style.

Your choice of wedding theme needs to add something of your own personality to it. Choosing a theme based on something that interests you both such as a hobby will make your wedding very unique to you. Choosing a theme that you know something about as well will make it much easier to plan and prepare, as opposed to choosing something totally unusual and for which you will need to spend lots of time researching.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that a wedding theme is something akin to a luxury fancy dress party! It is more about having a recurring theme that runs through every element of your wedding day, for instance, a butterfly wedding theme does not mean you have dress up as butterflies, but simply means that you use butterflies as a decorative element throughout your wedding, from your cake and wedding favors, to decorations and even things like butterfly picks in your hair and bouquet.

Although you may not have picked it yet, your choice of venue can dictate which way you go with your wedding theme. A waterside location for instance would say a nautical or sailing theme, whilst a ballroom could lend itself to a glamorous Hollywood style party or a 1920’s Art Deco theme. If you are stuck for ideas or have too many to choose from then finding your ideal venue first could help your decision making. Just make sure that you don’t choose a wedding theme that really doesn’t fit with the venue - a beach theme in a mountain retreat for instance could leave your guests a little bemused and confused!

If you have a wedding theme then you must use it throughout every element of your wedding, including:

- Your wedding attire, accessories and shoes
- Your hair and make-up
- Your attendants attire, accessories, shoes, hair and make-up
- Your wedding stationery
- Your venue decorations
- Your color scheme
- Your food - e.g. Asian style canapés/starters for an Asian theme
- Your wedding favors
- Your wedding cake
- Your wedding transport
- Your wedding music and entertainment

These last two are perhaps more optional as they can be more difficult to coordinate to your theme, depending on what it is. That said if you are creative you can always find a good solution!

Finally, your wedding theme needs to be obvious to your guests, too subtle and it will be totally lost on them and all your hard work will have been for nothing! A good idea is to create mood or inspiration boards in a scrapbook or on large sheets of think card. Show them to family and friends; if they immediately guess the theme then you are on the right track, if they don’t get it then you need to add more detail or start again!
