Since English has always been the most prominent language being used by the biggest media outfits and communication giants, most people have the misconception that having enough knowledge on this language is already adequate enough to get on with life. Because of this misconception many people think that learning a foreign language is just a waste of time. However, with globalization starting to loom over businesses, politics and entertainment, we just cannot sit back and have an apathetic view of other cultures and languages. It’s about time that more people learn about the different benefits of studying a foreign language.
If we’re going to think of how foreign language was viewed as an educational vehicle in the past decades, it was commonly seen it these two way. Either it was a crash course of some sorts which involved survival phrases to be used in a foreign country, without putting so much emphasis on comprehension, or it was prominent in one’s higher studies, that will someday enable them to become translators or educators. This fortunately is not how it is seen nowadays.

We cannot avoid becoming closer to each other with all the technological advances that have enabled communication to travel in the speed of light. And since we cannot avoid being exposed to other people’s beliefs and traditions, everyone needs to develop a higher sense of tolerance for each other. If only more people would put more effort into getting to know other cultures just through studying a new language, then there will likely be more peace on earth. And of all the benefits of studying a foreign language, this should be the most vital to be looked upon.
By learning a new language, businesses will become more successful as products and services will be able to reach a wider market and have a chance to become exposed to a global audience. There will also be a smooth transition between countries that want to go into partnerships when it comes to labor and supplies agreements. Foreign capital will be able to easily penetrate different industries and fueling for development studies on how some things can still be improved. If everyone learned a new language, then cooperation will be fostered among different races.
Becoming knowledgeable on a foreign language will open new doors for you. It will bring to you different employment opportunities that may not be available in your home country. It’s become somehow a necessity for certain industries such as tourism, foreign service and international organizational work that people with bilingual skills are viewed as more favorable candidates for employment than their counterparts who have not undergone any form of foreign language training.
So if you’re still apprehensive of the benefits of studying a foreign language, why not try it out yourself first before you? The fact of the matter is, no matter what foreign language you choose to study, it can be your contribution to the world to try to bridge the different cultures and traditions. Because once you are able to communicate with someone who is completely different from you, it can be the way to better understanding and respect for each other.
