How to Become a Principal

No doubt, well defined education is the most important part of a child's development and plays a major role in raising a child’s mind. Adding to this, schools are the ultimate and one of the single most important platforms for the education. It is one platform that helps in the academic and collective growth of every child. However, running any academy operation or school is never an easy job. In order to ensure the thriving operation and execution of proper school objectives, leaders carrying effective skills are necessary and this is where the role of the school principal becomes very important.

Principals are also known as education administrators are key persons accountable for running the entire school activities in school. They keenly work together with teachers and play a vital role in creating and upholding high curriculum standards along with establishing routine objectives. They even play an equal role in setting the educational tone for the school and ensure the proper execution of policies associated to faculty, students and school staff. These days, the role of principals has become more extensive. Apart from interacting with students and other administrators, they design budgets, reports and at times manage requests and effective allotment of teaching materials. Definitely, it is a career that combines management and education.

Today most of the public school principal jobs generally require an admissions counseling or graduate teaching degree. Though there are many principals who also carry master’s degree in education administration or educational leadership degree. So, if you are giving a serious thought or planning to become a principal, get the proper training in the management and select right education program. In fact, it would be better, if you pursue few important following steps –

1. Acquire a bachelor's degree in education or management associated fields. After this, try to become a certified teacher in your state after receiving a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

2. Substitute in the district in which you would like to teach. The best advantage of following this step is it helps in landing in the first teaching position.

3. You need to ensure that you teach at an entry level position after you are hired. As you progress through the ranks, join committees and act as an active player in all things concerning the school where you work and the school system as a whole.

4. After you have some years of teaching or administration experience under your belt, you can begin moving up the career ladder. The most important thing is to continue to display strong leadership skills in every position you hold. Act as an active volunteer to head up committees. Always remember the extra things you do always show your leadership abilities.

5. Finally, if you are tapped as a potential school principal, be aware that these days many states’ public schools require principals to be licensed school administrators. As a result of this, you may be required to:

• Pass written exams

• Work with a mentor, learning on-the-job skills needed to become a principal

• Take continuing education courses throughout your career

These important guidelines can surely be very effective and helpful to become a principal. Take the first step today and be a part of one of the largest industries in the United States. The career prospect of school principal is very impressive and in the next few years it is expected to rise about as fast as an average, growing 12%, from 226,000 jobs in 2006 to more than 253,000 jobs in 2016.
