The backhoe industry is evolving with features - here are some existing trends in the backhoe industry in 2008 to 2010. When purchasing a backhoe - these are some of the discussions to be aware of. Engine Standards

Tier 3 engines are being introduced to advances in engine designs. In 2004, the Environmental Protection Agency increased Tier 4 engine standards which will be phased in from 2008 to 2015. This will require an emission reduction of 90% more of particulate matter and NOx - but this is generally requiring the use of post-exhaust treatments. Tier 3 engines are only applicable for engines 225 ≤ kW < 450 (300 ≤ hp < 600)
Controls
Backhoe control is adapting to be easier to use for less experienced operators. Manual control still exists - it gives you the most level of control - like manual gear shifting.
