Karastan sounds like a country, preferably one that was created during the breakup of the Soviet Union. So obviously Karastan rugs would be rugs from that country, handmade with a secret art passed down from generation to generation. So imagine my surprise when I first learned that not only are these rugs from the United States, but they are machine-made!

Karastan rugs, as the famous story goes, were created by the legendary retailer Marshall Fields in 1928. They were really the first machine rugs which were said to reach the quality level that had previously been reserved for hand-made rugs and they were much less expensive.

Karastan Rugs are made from New Zealand wool, which is known is the purest, whitest wool in the world, and in fact Karastan Rugs is the largest consumer of New Zealand wool in the world. Wool is a non-allergenic fiber and does not promote the growth of bacteria or dust mites, or give off harmful emissions.

Karastan has been an innovator in the rug and carpet industry. In 1992, Karastan introduced of SisalWool. Sisal is a plant which produces a natural fiber that can be used in rug making. Karastan's SisalWool was a woven carpet a blend of wool and sisal characteristics, blending sisal's texture and look with the softness, durability, and stain resistance of wool. This creates a unique sisal rug.

Karastan's TeaWash process was invented in 1997, and gives rugs an aged look. It is a multi-step technique that transforms wool colors into a vintage style. Finally, Shapura was introduced in 2006. This is a style which revisits traditional rug design, partly from the Peshawar region in Pakistan.

The care guidelines for Karastan rugs are similar to other rugs Rug pads are strongly recommended. It is good to frequently vacuum the rugs and professional cleaning may be advisable. Karastan Rugs are famous and considered among the finest rugs made by power-loom in the world.
