How to Apply for Government Grants for Your Business

There are a number of government grants for starting a business and there can be a lot of competition for them unless you know where to look and how to apply. It really isn't as difficult as many people make out, at least, not if you have a little help and know what you're doing.

Small businesses are frequently started on a shoestring budget, but what if you could have the money you need to really start things off with a bang? Imagine the potential for launch when your marketing budget is of a sizeable amount right from the beginning? It could literally change how you start up your company and could mean the difference between failure and success within your first year, which is when most new businesses fold.

Finding Government Small Business Grants

The trick to actually getting the grants that you apply for is to select only the best. That doesn't necessarily mean the ones that offer the most money, but the funds that tend to be very specific. You can often find general funding in any online search, but getting into specifics is very important.

For example, if you have a choice between a "business grant" and a "grant for starting a fish related business", you'll have a far better chance of getting the second one. This is because there is less competition. The more specific the description, the fewer people will be applying and the more likely you are to get it, particularly if you write a great proposal.

What many people do is apply for more than one government grant, aiming for the smaller, more specific ones. And a large number of people end up gaining two, three or even four of the grants they apply for, which can add up to more than the original, general funding.

Application

When you go to apply for a government small business grant, you need to be sure that you have all the information needed. This isn't the same as writing a letter and if you don't yet have a business plan or budget carefully planned out, you will definitely need to before continuing with your application. They are looking for details and you'll need to provide plenty of information in the correct format if you want to be successful.

It's a good idea to take a look at some sample proposals and be sure that you know what you're doing before applying. Tutorials can be a great way to go if you can't find an experienced mentor in the field. While it's possible to write your own application for a government small business grant, you need to make sure you are doing it properly or it will never reach the decision makers.
