Secrets to Applying for Government Grants

Government grants are one of those things that everyone talks about and virtually no one pursues. Most people would be amazed at the amount of money that is allotted to these grants, which are dealt out as grants for single mothers, minorities and small business owners, just to name a few. Whether you are looking to get funding for a non-profit organization, to launch a business or simply to make home repairs, the process is much the same.

Unfortunately, the majority of people just don't understand how to apply for government grants. At first glance, it seems hopelessly complicated, and the vast majority of those considering applying will never even attempt it. Others will try once, but without the right proposal, they will probably lose out to someone who is more competitive and who did their homework on how to get a grant.

There are a number of things that can drastically improve your chances of getting money from the government.

1. Have a plan in place. No one is just handing out money here. While there is plenty to go around, you do need to present legit reasons as to why you should be given a government funded grant. The decision makers need to see that you have a plan for turning the money into something specific, be that water filters for poor families in Guatemala or a new roof for your home.

2. Figure out a budget. Make sure you have a budget at the ready. You should do your research to find out prices and make sure you have a clear idea where the money will be going. This should all be detailed. If you are applying for grant money to launch a business, you will also need a timeline to show how you expect to spend the money over time.

3. Look for the least amount of competition. Most people look at the biggest grants they can find, but that isn't always the best way to go. Instead, check out smaller, more specific groups and you will drastically reduce your competition, making it easier to get two or three government grants that add up to the same as the higher competition ones. Narrow your search down as much as possible, using race, gender and occupation to find more specific government grants.

4. Get some reliable help. Whether this is a website that offers all the information you need or a mentor who will coach you via email or even a comprehensive ebook, you'll be far more successful if you know what you're doing. Look for tutorials to help you get through the sometimes complicated proposal writing process.

Government grants exist for just about everything. If you use the tips given here, you'll be able to get government small business grants, grants for college or home repair and just about anything else you can think of. It's well worth learning how to apply for them. Why let someone else get the money that you could use to start your dream business?
