Three Ways Operators Pick a Win While Gambling

Basically you have three ways to win while you are playing lottery in your district, playing slot machines at an online casino or buying a scratch card at your local convenience store. They are similar but each come with a unique psychological impact.

Online gambling such as slot machines games or roulette in an online gambling casino each have an inherent Random Number Generator embedded inside. These RNG’s produce a random number when the spin button is pressed. This number is evaluated for a win/loss payout after the number has been produced and displayed after the spin by the player. For each consecutive spin and for each player a random number is produced independently of the previous or the subsequent RNG outcome. So in theory there could be two large wins back to back. Or there could be a string of “No Wins” extending over a short period of time. This is due to the law of averages, which allows for an uneven distribution of wins over a relatively short period of time. When the period of time is extended the wins and losses will even out and eventually come to rest on the RTP (Return To Player) that was programmed into the RNG. Many Online casinos have a 95 RTP.

In a pooled lottery system a certain number of tickets are sold during a given period of time. Once the sales have stopped a RNG produces random ticket numbers to define the winners. The exact amount won overall is programmed into the calculations. So the exact amount won and returned to the players is not random. To give a simple example lets say that 1,000,000 tickets were sold at $1 each. The operators have determined exactly how much will be returned to the players. Let’s say this is $100,000. The RNG randomly selects the winners but allocates a certain predefined amounts to be won on a predetermined number of players. A $100,000 payout over a $1,000,000 would be called a 90 RTP (Return To players).

In a scratch card system the cards are printed up with the winning and loosing numbers already printed on the card “before the event”. The RNG was used to randomly select the winning and loosing ticket numbers just like the previous two systems in the casinos and in the lottery. But it was used “prior “ to the wins instead of after.

Some players feel that a separate calculation on every roll of the dice or every spin of the wheel such as is the case with online games is more fair than a pooled type of game such a lottery or scratch cards system. There is nothing in existence that does not have a relative meaning attached to it. And for every person the object remains the same yet the meaning is different. So I can not argue that the three systems have different meaning for every different person. What I am trying to get to is the meaning that it will have for “me”. I understand the different systems that produce the normal online casino slot games with a RNG and the Pooled games using some form of randomness to print the winning numbers on the tickets. The big difference I see is that the pooled systems have a smother variance. Their payout is based on the same RTP but over a specific time period. This comes with a definite psychological impact for some people. Yet the idea of one being more fair or less fair could be well placed for a particular player. For me an unfair practice would be one that gives the operators more money at the end of the game and the players less. This does not seam to be the case in any of these systems.
