What is Bowhunting?

Before you get started with bowhunting, it is first important to get an idea of what it actually is. Bowhunting is a form of archery wherein an individual uses the sport to take game animals. As in any form of archery, bowhunting uses a crossbow or a bow in order to shoot arrows towards a target. A specific kind of bowhunting practiced in order to catch fish is called bowfishing.

Bowhunting is actually one of the oldest forms of archery, with the bow and arrow used by the Egyptians as early as 7500 BC. These equipments were used both for hunting and for warfare. However, interest in the field of bowhunting as we know it actually began before the second World War, and in the 1930s, the first bowhunting season was declared and held.

The major difference between bowhunting and hunting using firearms is the necessary distance from the target, or what is known as the “safety zone”. Compared to hunting with a rifle, bowhunters have to minimize their distance to approximately 45 yards or less in order to make sure that the animal is killed quickly. Because of this, bowhunters need to develop the ability to approach their prey without being noticed, so as not to drive the prey away or get attacked by the animal. This can be accomplished by several techniques, such as stalking, still hunting or waiting by a tree or in a blind.

Bowhunting for various animal species is considered legal in many countries. Large game hunts, which include deer, wolves, elks, mountain goats and lions, and even bears, remain very popular, although smaller game hunts, such as boars and turkeys, also have a respectable following.

In the United States, the practice of bowhunting is controlled and regulated by the specific states and provinces. In most places, a specific bowhunting season, termed the “Bow Seasoon”, is scheduled separate from firearm hunting of an animal. There are also other technical rules that must be followed, such as minimum draw weights when bowhunting for big games and the use of crossbows.

Some countries, such as the United Kingdom and Germany, do not allow the practice of bowhunting. Other countries, such as New Zealand, require permits before one can bowhunt legally in the country. Still other countries, such as Australia, make use of bowhunting in order to control some animal populations, while prohibiting the killing of native animal species.

There are many bowhunting companies available that can book your bowhunting trips or excursions. The trips usually include a bowhunting guide, who leads the hunting party to an area where the density of the hunted species is known to be high. The party will then set up their base and look for locations where they can place baits. The guide helps by informing the party of the regulations, offering tips to the hunters and monitoring the activities from an advantageous position.

Bowhunting is an enjoyable, rewarding activity. You get to interact with nature while developing new skills and enjoying the company of your friends. Try it!
