Applying Different Tutoring Styles

Teaching styles and learning styles vary depending on the mental make-up of the individuals. In a typical school setting, tutors normally focus on only one style of delivery. This is one of the reasons for children and adults finding it difficult to learn matters related to some particular topics. A student's learning style has to be found out, and then one has to tailor-make your tuition sessions accordingly.

In the case of tuition teacher preferring to use visual teaching methods while the student learns best through auditory channels, learning gets stymied and difficulties are likely to surface. Inexperienced tuition teachers may not even realize what caused the problem in the first place. If you've ever found yourself in a situation where you find it difficult to connect with a student, or have found that a student still doesn't seem to imbibe the nuances even after several days of tutoring, perhaps, the teaching style needs a make-over.

Learning happens with the help of three major channels: visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic. Though most people learn using a combination of all the three channels, usually one form of assimilation allows for easier learning. This preference is strong in some people, and this makes the learning process a bit difficult. A student can benefit from tutoring by delivering knowledge, tailored in a style that suits the student’s personal learning style.

There are some characteristics typical of students of each learning style and most of these are general in nature. One category is that of the visual learners. They prefer a quiet environment when studying or doing some work. They usually have vivid dreams; and they remember faces, but not names. They prefer a map to written directions.

The next category is that of the auditory learners. They remember names, but not faces; and "hear" the words while reading silently. These people enjoy studying or working in a group.

Kinaesthetic Learners are people who enjoy building models and get easily distracted by movements and sounds.

In fact, recognizing a student's learning style is only one piece of successful tutoring. To aid your students in achieving educational success, you must modify your teaching style to suit their learning needs. A visual learner will benefit when the scope of colour coding is properly utilized. For instance when plotting x and y axis, use differently coloured lines. Colour-coded flash cards are helpful to make one memorize math facts and formulae.

Make auditory learners orally repeat most of the subject matter they need to learn. Read-aloud strategy works best for them. While reading, ask students to use his finger or a bookmark to keep his attention fixed. Auditory learners can be overwhelmed by a page full of text. But remember that this is not a "defect", but simply a trait of the individual.

Kinaesthetic learners, also called tactile learners, learn best while doing something moving their bodies. All young children are kinaesthetic learners, so it's important to use manipulative such as blocks, pieces of candy, or buttons when working on math problems.

If you are new to the tutoring profession or have always taught using one particular method only, it might feel a bit awkward at first. But very soon, you'll feel comfortable applying these methods, as you experience success.
