Knowing Your Students' Hemispheric Dominance

Being a tutor, you would have heard the terms-- right-brained & left-brained. But have you ever gone deep into the aspect of how being a right or left-brained person affects one’s learning capacities? While brain dominance, also called hemispheric dominance, influences the way an individual grasps things, it does not necessarily mean that a left-brained person, for example, uses only the left side of his brain. All of us use both hemispheres of the brain; in other words, all activities and thoughts use both sides of the brain simultaneously. At the same time, people do have a preference for using one particular side of the brain, especially when learning new or complex subjects.

An understanding about your students' hemispheric dominance can be helpful in guiding them towards success in academic related matters. Right-brained students differ from left-brained students in the manner they process information. Applying a new shift in your teaching methods can bring about considerable improvement in the students’ grades.
The conventional schooling approach of public schools greatly favours the left-brained children. You will possibly notice that most of your current methods of tutoring will nicely engage left-brained people. Tutors may also find that students who need and seek tuition are, in most cases, right-brain dominant.

People who are dominantly right-brained tend to process information visually and intuitively. They look at the given information in its totality and have more difficulty breaking down information into small parts. These people have a leaning towards creative subjects such as painting, drawing, and music.

In order to help a right-brained student, give an overview or a broad picture before introducing the subject. Encourage them to read the entire chapter in advance itself; before the tutor begins to cover the study material in the tuition class. Giving such kind of an overview will enable your right-brained student to grasp more of the minor details.

Those having right-brain dominance exhibit randomness in their thought processes. You can find that these students move from one topic to another in a seemingly haphazard fashion. Remember, this is the effect of your student's hemispheric dominance and it is not at all a defect. Impatience and harsh responses will shut your student down and can damage the student-tutor relationship.

People with left-brain dominance have a logical thought process and have the capability to process words and languages. These people remember names better than faces, and often understand written directions better than going through a map. Left-brained learners thrive on details and it is important to provide your left-brained students with clear and comprehensive directions before embarking on a project.

Left-brained students enjoy using languages, either written or oral, to express their self. When it comes to math, these people will benefit from applying word problems to difficult math questions. Reading out each problem and working on it can prove very beneficial.
